Book Rambling: Dragonbreath

Dragonbreath (Dragonbreath, #1)Dragonbreath by Ursula Vernon
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Danny Dragonbreath is a dragon in trouble. No matter how hard he tries or how many pep talks he endures from his dad Danny cannot breathe fire. He’s the only dragon at Herpitax-Phibbias School for Reptiles and Amphibian, where he is routinely harassed by Big Eddy, Komodo dragon bully. Now his last second report on the Snorkelbat earned him an F from Mr. Snaug, who is demanding a rewrite by the next day.

Danny brushes off his best friend Wendell’s suggestion he go to the library. Instead Danny persuades Wendell to come with on a visit to his sea monster cousin. Wendell is less than impressed with the subsequent adventures as the trio investigates a sunken ship, enters an ocean crevasse, meet deep down fish and run afoul of a giant squid.

This hybrid graphic novel/chapter book is an entertaining read for elementary school readers. The characters are fun, with Danny’s not so fond of mornings mother, Danny’s impetuous nature and Wendell’s pessimism. Danny’s issues with bullies may well resonate with young readers. His attempt at a report made me think of the Calvin & Hobbes bat report strips. I would recommend this title to second through fourth graders at my school.
